Criterion’s Black is a product of its time: which is to say that, for those who have been there, it is merely probably the greatest shooter experiences there was. I say ‘expertise’ as a result of that is what Black felt like: a sport that nearly blew again the wallpaper as your ludicrously boombastic weapons chewed by way of enemies and surroundings alike on the CRT. The studio, then and now identified finest for the Burnout collection, had managed to pivot into the FPS style and make an insta-classic.

Which is why it is a supply of some disappointment, even now, that Black was it. Criterion by no means went on to make one other shooter. Key expertise concerned in Black left Criterion: the lead programmer was some bloke referred to as Sean Murray (sure that one), whereas co-creator Stuart Black (actually) went on to Codemasters and the disappointing Bodycount. Maybe extra importantly, whereas a few of Black’s creators may see a future for the sport (and it bought nicely sufficient to justify one), in the end neither Criterion or EA did.
